here are some pictures from the exhibition of maison martin margiela '20' in the Antwerp fashion museum I visited yesterday, an exhibition because of the 2o- anniversary of the label.
martin margiela is especially known for his use of second-hand materials or materials with low commercial value. early on in his career he decided not to go public as a designer and to let his designs speak for itself. his choice for anonymity became an important element of the label, this is also used in the presentations of his collections. take a look:

fall/winter 2002-2003 coat made of two secondhand fur coats
XXXL - The Maison used a different standardized body than we are used to in fashion in several collections. This XXXL over sized dress is an example from spring/summer 2009
Printed clothing in which each piece is printed with a photo of another garment, which for example originally is made from a total different fabric. The pieces at the picture are from the spring/summer 1996 collection.Maison Martin Margiela: 'we have always enjoyed the challenge of reworking existing clothes, fabrics and objects to create new garments and accessories. this challenge is linked to finding a new role and force for these materials, revisiting their structure and use.'

since fall/winter 1994-1995s collection, maison martin margiela presents a new t-shirt from which all the revenue goes to helping aids. the t-shirt is always printed with the text: 'there is more action to be done to fight aids than to wear this t-shirt but it's a good start', not necessarily directly visible. last day of the winter break already, back to real life by tomorrow.
